SUMMARY:AN@S Shares: Unpacking Wellness\, Part I
DESCRIPTION:With emerging diseases like COVID-19 affecting our lives\, biologically and socially\, it calls for action to empower our Arab community with up-to-date information to confidently make informed decisions about their lives moving forward. AN@S is therefore proud to introduce a knowledge sharing initiative called “AN@S Shares: Unpacking Wellness”. This initiative brings bite-sized talks to you\, encapsulating prevailing health issues in our community. Our first talk will be on 11 September at the Malay Heritage Centre. \nConversations on health are growing in prominence as countries work towards operationalising World Health Organisation’s (WHO) definition of health – “the state of complete physical\, mental and social well-being\, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. Over the years\, Singapore has progressively adopted this lens through a population health approach to improve health outcomes\, promote well-being and address health inequalities across the different population groups in the country. \nAN@S echoes this multifaceted definition and supports Singapore’s efforts to improve the health of our communities including our Arab community. We’d like to contribute to these efforts through this initiative\, InsyaAllah. \nAN@S’ first talk in this #unpackingwellness series will cover women’s health\, mental health and eye health. Topics to be discussed in this talk will be on managing pregnancy and menopause\, addressing mental health stigma\, and maintaining and improving vision. \n  \nOur team of 3 medical experts comprise Dr. Lubna Harhara\, Dr. Radiah Salim Bintalib and Dr. Sharifah Zainah Alsagoff\, who will lead various discussions of the topics. All speakers have extensive experience in their respective fields\, in advocating the need to have the highest level of health and well-being for all\, especially for vulnerable and marginalised groups. \nAt the end of the talk\, these experts will be involved in a panel discussion. Each will share new insights gathered through their work working ‘the new normal’. They will also offer advice on how you can build a strong relationship with your physician\, how to leverage medical technology to manage your health\, and how to evaluate health information. DESCRIPTION:Imam al-Ghazali (RHA) says the tongue (Al-Lisan) is a great asset and a wonder out of the wonderful creations of Allah (SWT). Though it may look like an insignificant organ\, its power is unlimited\, its sins are heinous\, and its virtues are great. A hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) implies that the tongue is the ‘interpreter of the heart’: If the heart is sound\, the condition of the tongue follows suit. In the world of social media\, our keyboards become extensions of our tongues. But whilst our tongues may only be heard by a few people around us\, the “online tongue” has a wider reach and a more extensive impact. \n \nThe Arab Network @ Singapore is pleased to present a Zoom talk by Sister Khadijah Alkaff on 10th July at 2pm entitled Al-Lisan: Power of the Tongue. DESCRIPTION:Yemen is facing “the world’s worst humanitarian crisis” (UN). The Governorate of Hadramawt is an epicentre for Covid-19 cases in Yemen. On June 15th\, of the 116 new cases and deaths recorded in all of Yemen\, 73 cases and deaths were from Hadramawt alone. Since then\, the numbers have risen\, in some cases exponentially. \nThe Arab Network @ Singapore (AN@S) is appealing to you for critical support. The first cut-off date for donations is 5th July for our immediate first shipment. Collections for donations is on-going for subsequent shipments. DESCRIPTION:COVID19 has impacted everyone. Thankfully many Singaporeans are still comfortable\, despite restrictions on movement. However some families are not as fortunate. They need to ration their grocery items and other necessities. DESCRIPTION:The Hadrami Arabs have played significant roles in Singapore’s trade\, education\, social unity\, philanthropy\, community development\, music and culture. \nFor the past year\, a group of Singaporean Arab youths have embarked on a journey to trace their heritage and ancestral roots\, gathering personal stories about their ancestors who have made the journey from Hadramawt\, Yemen across the Indian Ocean\, to Singapore. These stories will be showcased through objects and documents loaned from private collections\, in a landmark exhibition. \nCome discover their heritage and trace the legacies of the Singapore Arab Community by visiting the Here and Now: Arabs in Singapore exhibition.  The Opening Ceremony of the exhibition will be on Saturday\, 13th April and we are pleased to confirm that President Halimah Yacob will be the Guest of Honour for the event. DESCRIPTION:AN@S together with the NUS College of Alice & Peter Tan\, is proud to present AN@S Knowledge Series -The Dangers of Social Intervention \nOur esteemed speaker\, Mr. Robin Low (see bio-data below)\, will explain on why and how social intervention is a lot more complex than what people make it out to be. \nNote: This talk is only open to students of CAPT – NUS as part of their Emerging Asia: Successes and Challenges module taught by Dr Linda Matar.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\nRobin Low\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRobin is the co-founder of Civil Innovation Lab\, promoting Social impact through civil action and local innovation. A lab in collaboration with various universities including Stanford University to enhance efficiency and impact on social initiatives. Running workshops to change behavior and innovate business and social impact. \nRobin co-founded Relief 2.0 (www.relief20.com) Robin went on an International Photo Exhibit\, Tohoku: Road to the Future Tour to promote sustainable disaster recovery\, by engaging\, empowering\, enabling and connecting survivors to the support they need. He was in more than 20 countries sharing the arts\, crafts as well as recovery progress of the Japan Tsunami and how communities could support one another in times of disaster. \nRobin owns Greenyarn LLC\, a nanotechnology company based in Boston which manufactures sustainable socks\, fabric and apparel for environmentally conscious consumers. A frequent guest speaker at many nanotechnology events and sustainable tradeshows\, he enjoys sharing knowledge and tips for sustainable manufacturing. \nHe founded Doing.gd\, a social movement to help make volunteering and doing good easy. He’s also creating employment for Amputees in Jakarta – hiring them to make changeable sandals. Robin is a mentor at Grameen Creative Labs and supports Prof. Yunus in many social business initiatives in the region. \nAn international entrepreneur involved in training\, researching and consulting companies on the use of Social Media\, Robin is currently helping to rebrand Baja California in collaboration with Emerson College (Guest Lecture) and the Mexican Tourism Board. Robin is involved in the Rosarito Film Festival and Art Week. He also trains the Tourism industry in Sri Lanka\, Indonesia and Singapore. \nRobin was in Japan a week after the Earthquake and Tsunami and is Co-founder of Relief 2.0 which seeks to achieve sustainable disaster recovery through human development.  He started Markets of Hope with Carlos Miranda Levy to turn survivors into Entrepreneurs and help them sell art\, fashion and handcrafts online. \nSince 2008\, Robin has been training companies on Social Media and in 2009\, did comprehensive training for Aitken Spence Hotels and Aitken Spence Travels\, the largest hotel chain in Sri Lanka with Luxury hotels in Maldives\, India\, Oman and Sri Lanka. Aitken Spence has since seen an increase in hotel occupancy\, customer retention and Internet bookings. \nRobin enjoys inspiring youth at many universities – including at Emerson College\, Harvard University\, National University of Singapore and Singapore Management Institute. He started @SGbrands\, a twitter account to help Singapore Companies evangelise their brands and @SGTweetup\, a twitter networking account. He has managed several Twitter gatherings and talks in Singapore\, Boston and New York. \nHe is the author of a entrepreneurship book is working on a second book on “Good intentions gone bad”. \nNot to be outdone by her master\, Robin’s cat\, Satsugai has been voted #1 Cat (Shorty Awards).  She has more than 22\,000 twitter followers and 2900 fans on Facebook. Satsugaicat is currently helping spread awareness of Cat Welfare Society and other worthy pet causes.

After the success of our inaugural programme last year\, we are blessed to have your support to hold another programme this year. This time it will be a 3-day school holiday spiritual programme for 20 children (9 to 15 year olds)  from 29 to 31 May 2018. The children were guided by Ustazah Mariam Alias entitled Ramadhan\, Quran and Beyond. Ustazah Mariam will be covering the seerah/history of Ramadhan including the struggles of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in receiving and spreading the Revelation\, charity and hunger in Ramadhan and Laylatul Qadr.  \nFees are $75 per child and sibling discounts are available upon request. SUMMARY:The Colours that Heal: The Hidden Stories of Life as a Refugee
DESCRIPTION:Images of refugee children drowning and people trapped to their deaths filled our screens in recent weeks. Official UNHCR figures list the number of refugees worldwide at 13 million. In Lebanon alone there are approximately half a million Palestinian refugees currently residing in 11 camps across the country. More than 50% of these refugees are women and half are below the age of 25. \nThe physical difficulties of being forced to flee from their homeland and settle in camps can be seen from the visible injuries and cramped living conditions at these camps. Resolving these difficulties are a priority to most NGOs who are providing help from all over the world. However\, the effort to heal their long-term mental and emotional scars has become less of a priority due to lack of awareness and expertise. \nThe Arab Network@Singapore is pleased to present two experts in the field of mental therapy who will share their first-hand experiences working with refugees. Therefore\, by combining the gala dinner with the charity element\, the AN@S Leyaali el-Khayr 2013 will be an effective embodiment of AN@S’ aims and objectives. The Leyaali el-Khayr Charity Gala Dinner 2013 is also the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself with the Arab culture in all its splendour while enjoying sumptuous Arabic cuisine to give you a truly Arabic experience at your own doorstep. \nThe event itself will start with a bang when the Guest of Honour\, Speaker of Parliament\, Mdm Halimah Yacob\, will be given a traditional Yemeni welcome by the Arabian Knights dance and music troupe. During the dinner itself\, guests will be entertained by musicians\, singers\, dancers and fashion models including an international violinist\, Maher Salamé\, who hails from Lebanon. These performances will showcase Arab music\, dance and artistic expressions that will surely captivate and entertain all guests.
